After a good walk with Trento along the Leeds Liverpool Canal we had our aim set high. We passed the Martin Inn. We could even have gone to The Farm, which we like. But no we pressed on, we were not to be distracted. Not even the thought of a cool beer in The Farmers or The Slipway could deter us. No, today we were steering towards The Box Tree Cafe at the Burscough Wharf. I'd seen it before and it looked good, and the website had raised my expectations.
It was the day the Wharf was celebrating its first anniversary with a transport festival and the place looked great. There was a fabulous green double decker parked in the yard.
In the Box Tree although it was not busy there was a short queue to get served and the young girl appeared to be struggling to keep up. Despite this the woman who appeared to be in charge was talking to a visitor. I was disappointed as I was looking forward to my tea and cake. The signs looked good. Trento was hitched up outside and I wanted to enjoy the moment and get back to my "Kemo Sabe." After five minutes queueing the conversation continued and then they were joined by another woman. I was still waiting to be served. As yet no-one had been served. After a couple more minutes the woman said to her two friends, "Can I get you anything?" Well that was it. I'd had enough. I left. I will be back, perhaps. The Box Tree may get another bite of the Cherry Bakewell but for now it's had its chance. There are lots of other places I have yet to visit once. Which is a real pity as the cakes looked good.
Trento and I went home cakeless on the No.2 from Preston to Ormskirk.

About Me

- The Scone Ranger
- I am the Scone Ranger. I have been posted to West Lancashire until March 2015, and I have set myself a mission. Each week for those 3 and a half years I will visit a different place in West Lancashire (preferably by public transport) in order to have a cup of tea, a piece of cake and a sit down. I'll then share this with you so that you know the best places to go and how to get there. Just to make sure that I get treated just the same as you, and get no preferential status by way of my elevated role as cake taster, I will wear my mask when visiting each place. Hence my name, The Scone Ranger. Yours Scone
